J’ai enfin trouvé un panneau de la ville et la mairie pour prendre une photo, mais croyez moi, ça vaut vraiment pas le coup de prendre « ça » en photo.

J’ai donc trouvé l’endroit idéal, la preuve que je suis à Marietta ! Le big chicken ! Le seul au monde, le tout premier KFC !

Aussi, j’ai reçu un magnifique cadeau de la part de mon maitre de stage que je veux vous faire partager !

I finally found a sign of the city and the government building to take a picture, but believe me, you don’t really want to see that!

So I found the ideal place, the proof that I am in Marietta! The Big Chicken! The only one in the world, the first KFC!

I also want to share with you a wonderful present that my boss give to me today.

Je viens de me rendre compte que cet article est obligatoire ! Oups… Donc, même si, pour plus de logique j’aurais du le faire au début du stage, je le fais que maintenant.

Donc les choses à faire en arrivant :

1. Dès que l’avion a atterrit, récupérez toutes vos affaires et attendez que les portes s’ouvrent !

2. Suivez les panneaux et passez la douane !! Comptez 1 heure pour être en toute légalité sur le territoire US et donc passer les services d’immigration!  Bon courage pour porter votre valise qui fait 28 kg, sans personne qui vous aide, puis redonnez-la.

3. Trouver vos bagages pour la seconde fois !

Je rigole, soyons sérieux un petit peu !

Il n’est pas très facile de venir aux EU, il y a beaucoup de démarches, notamment avec Parenthèse ! Mais, quand on a le visa et tout le nécessaire on peut venir aux EU. Je vais parler de que faire en arrivant d’un point de vu légal !

1. Quand on arrive aux EU, se déclarer auprès des autorités françaises (pas obligatoire mais fortement conseillé pour bénéficier de la protection consulaire en tant que de besoin)

2. S’inscrire au service SEVIS sur internet ! Il demande notre adresse, et à chaque fois qu’on change, on doit les avertir ! J’ai du changer 4 fois ! Le SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) est un système mis en place par le gouvernement américain permettant de contacter toute personne entrée aux Etats-Unis avec un visa.

3. S’inscrire à la sécurité sociale 10 jours après le début du stage. Attendre des heures avec son ticket pour passer si on n’a pas de rendez vous ! Je recommande de dormir en attendant !! La loi américaine nous impose d’effectuer les démarches d’immatriculation à la « social security ». Vous existerai donc sur le territoire, vous pourrez aussi être rémunéré et ouvrir un compte en banque.

4. Aller ouvrir un compte en banque à Bank of America (montant minimun : $25).

Voila pour les formalités administratives et légales !

Cependant, je peux encore donner d’autres conseils sur que faire en arrivant et ne pas oublier :

- Envoyer un message ou appeler les parents pour leur dire qu’on est ENFIN arrivé après 10h de vol et qu’on a récupéré nos bagages !

- Envoyer un email à son maitre de stage pour lui dire qu’on est bien arrivé et qu’on sera là lundi !

- Ne pas commencer à goûter à tout !

- Aller faire du shopping !

- Ne pas paniquer car on ne comprend pas un mot d’anglais !

I just noticed that this part of my blog is necessary… So, better late than never.

Things to do when you arrive:

1. When the plane landed, take all of your belongings and wait until the door opens.

2. Follow the signs and go thru customs! Allow 1 hour for the process to unfold before officially arriving in America. Good luck finding someone who could help you carries your suitcase to the next checking area.

3. Then, find your suitcase on the next carrousel for the second time!

I am kidding, be serious!

It not very easy to come to do your internship in the US, there are a lot of steps, specifically with “Parenthèse” (organizing association). Once you have your visa and all the necessary documentation you can travel to the USA. I will talk about what you have to do when you arrive in the USA.

1. It is highly recommended to alert the French authority of your travels overseas. This is not an obligation however in case of need you may obtain help from the French Embassy.

2. Register with SEVIS online! They will ask for your address, and every time you change address, you may change online. I had to change 4 times. The SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is a system created by the US and it allows the American authorizes to contact every person in the US with a visa.

3. Register with the US social security local office within 10 days after the beginning of the internship. It is recommended to make an appointment in order to avoid waiting a couple hours with your ticket. The best part is you can sleep while you wait! The American law requires that all intern follow this procedure, this step will allow you to receive compensation for work and facilitate the opening a bank account.

4. Go to open a bank account (min : $25)

Now you know more about the initial administrative and legal steps to take upon you arrival in the USA!

However, I can give you more advice:

-Alert your parents that you arrived safely after 10 hours of flying and that your bags arrived safely also.

-Send an email to your director of the US internship to say that you are ok and you will be ready to work on Monday.

-Don’t start to taste everything.

-Go shopping.

-Don’t panic if you don’t understand everything in English.

Pour aider tout le monde, Atlanta, c’est en Géorgie ! Non, pas le petit pays ou la seule chose que l’on sait dessus c’est … que c’est compliqué et « athlète - 21 ans - ouverture des JO  de Vancouver».

Moi je vous parle de l’état de Géorgie aux Etats-Unis ! Les états limitrophes de la Géorgie sont L’Alabama, La Floride, Le Tennessee et la Caroline du Nord et du Sud. L’état s’étend sur presque 154 km² et compte environ 9,5 millions d’habitants. Il y a 159 counties.
La ville la plus peuplée de Géorgie est Atlanta qui est aussi la capitale. Il y a 537 mille habitants ce qui fait d’elle la 33^ème ville le plus peuplée des Etats-Unis en 2007. Après Atlanta, en Géorgie, il y a Augusta, Columbus, Savannah…

Le gouverneur est Sonny Perdue, R. Il est gouverneur depuis 2003 et il est le premier gouverneur républicain en Géorgie.

Il y a plusieurs symboles pour la Géorgie, mais le plus connu est la pêche. D’ailleurs le surnom de la Géorgie est « Peach State ». Comme autres symboles il y a :

D’ailleurs pour ceux qui connaissent Toulouse, l’énorme Phoenix qu’il y a dans les jardins Cafarelli a été offert par la ville d’Atlanta après la catastrophe AZF en 2001 grâce à John Lyons (membre et président de la Chambre de Commerce française et américaine il y a environ 20 ans et ensuite membre du groupe de jumelage Atlanta-Toulouse.  Et accessoirement l’homme qui a trouvé mon stage !). Comme partout aux EU, la Géorgie a ses lois propres.
Par exemple, comme dit dans un précédant article, on ne peut pas acheter d’alcool quand on n’a pas 21 ans aux Etats-Unis ! Loi spécifique à la Géorgie : on ne peut pas acheter d’alcool le dimanche au supermarché ou autres ! Seulement au restaurant ou dans les bars ! Donc si vous allez au supermarché le dimanche, au rayon alcool il y a des grands rubans ou rideau qui recouvre l’alcool !!
Les états ne peuvent pas casser les lois nationales, mais ils peuvent les arranger. J’explique : la loi sur l’alcool à 21ans est une loi nationale, un état peut décider que ça sera 22 ans dans cet état, mais il ne peut pas dire que ça sera 18 ans.
Il existe des « dry county ». Ce sont des counties ou il est interdit de vendre des bières ou alcool. Mais, certaines counties sont partiellement « dry » donc on peut boire de l’alcool au restaurant ou dans les bars.
La Géorgie n’accepte pas le mariage gay, mais la Californie l’accepte.
Le tabac ! Interdit dans les transports publics, dans certains restaurants, dans les écoles avant l’université (en dessous de 18ans), Eglises… Pour l’université, il est autorisé de fumer sur le campus mais pas dans les locaux, au lycée, les professeurs qui fument doivent sortir de la propriété de l’école pour fumer !

I’m talking to you about the state of Georgia in the United States! The adjacent states of Georgia are Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, North and South Carolina and the ocean. It is 154km² and has a population of about 9,5 million people. Not to mention there are 159 counties.
The biggest city in Georgia is Atlanta, which also happens to be the capital. There are about 537,145 inhabitants so, Atlanta is the 33^rd biggest city in the US (based on 2007 data). The 3 next largest cities in Georgia are Augusta, Columbus and Savannah.

The governor is Sonny Perdue, R. He has been governor since 2003 and is the first republican governor in Georgia.

As stated in a previous article, you cannot buy alcohol when you are under the age of 21. Specific law to Georgia: you cannot buy alcohol on Sunday in a grocery store or liquor stores! Only in restaurants or bars! So if you go to the grocery store on Sunday, the isle for alcohol will be blocked to patrons.
Also each state can create its own laws they cannot break the national law. I mean: Law about alcohol at 21 is a national law, but a state can decide that it will be 22 in its state, but it cannot be 18 years old.
There are some dry counties. These are counties where you cannot sell beer or alcohol. But, some are partially dry so you can drink alcohol in restaurants or in bars.
Georgia does not accept gay marriage, but California does.
Tobacco use is not allowed in public transportation, most restaurants, on school grounds before college (under 18 years old), most churches… Most colleges allow smoking on campus but not in the buildings. In High schools, teacher who smoke have to leave the school property to smoke.
